Private cars : Is it for our betterment or global harassment?

Environment surrounding us today is more polluted as compared to the one it was before people used to have private vehicles. One of the major reasons of the degradation of our environment is increased and more frequent use of private cars. It has also contributed to increase the size of the hole that has been made in the environment protection cover – the ozone layer. This has not only increased the risk of entry of harmful rays in our environment but has also increased incidences of faster skin aging along with increased risk of skin cancers.

To initiate with, I would like to throw light on some of the points which has affected everyone’s life after introduction of private cars. Basically it has made people more dependent and lazy. People use their cars even to reach nearest of places, which they otherwise would have covered walking also, in absence of private cars. Countries like U.S., Canada are known as countries on wheel, people use their car even to get breads. This has made people sloth and also reduced the level of physical activity in routine life, rather we should encourage more of walking to nearby distance atleast. Excessive use of private cars has also increased the traffic jam and din on roads, which lead to delay in reaching the destination.Instead people can opt for public transports unless it's really required to use private cars.

Eventually, it has also led to increased use of natural resources like petrol diesel and so their depletion rate. These fuel releases toxic gases which are harmful not only to human health but also to our surrounding flora and fauna which helps in maintaining the nature’s food cycle. Increased noise pollution also led to adverse human physiological changes and also is harmful for heart patients.

Finally, there is still one more harm which i think has increased with increased use of private cars is road mishaps, car accidents. Accident rates have increased significantly since the use of private cars which is fatal to death also sometimes.

To wrap up, I would like to say using private vehicles such as cars has deteoriated our mother nature drastically. Time has come when we should ruminate on all these points and stop using private cars as far as possible. If we cannot help maintaining good environment, at least we should not contribute to its degradation

Well I must concede that you come well armed with supporting arguments and many of your reasons are valid however you fail to provide viable alternatives.

I agree in how easy it has become to abuse the use of private vehicles and I know that I am in the minority of people who choose to walk when I can. (I am reminded of my immediate neighbor whom I frequently see firing up his diesel truck just to transport himself from his house to his garage which is maybe 20 yards away.)

That said there are situations where it is all but impossible to manage without a personal vehicle and I do not believe that they should be judged harshly as contributing to the whole when left with no other alternative.

I do appreciate a well written hub, however, and appreciate your thoughts on the matter. Keep writing!

Thanks for your appreciation and suggestions.

As mentioned by you sometimes we don't have any other option apart from using our private vehicles, it is very true.

What I meant in my article was private vehicle should be avoided using on a daily basis unless it is required. As you must be aware that there are people who insist on using private cars as mark of status or style statement. I think this can be avoided and rather we should encourage using public transport or by walking (if its walkable distance). Walking also helps improving health.

Thanks once again for your valuable comments.

I agree that use of private cars over public transport has lot of cons as described in this article, but at the same time it's inevitable. Now using it as a style statement narrows it down to mediocre or expensive car, but atleast at the end of the day we need one.

Further ongoing researches for development of cleaner and cheaper source of energy for fueling cars are trying to mitigate lot of negatives mentioned above.

@Anshuman, Thanks for your suggestions and feedback.

The piece of information you have provided can be very realistic alternative for private cars running on petroleum. But the cost and high maintanence factor may come into picture while considering acceptance of such cars by common public or it may take longer to get accepted by everyone. Overall, till that time we cannot affort to hamper our mother nature anymore. Changing lifestyle can be the only faster option at this point of time.

Here, i fully agree with Rupa. I live in Chandigarh. And here a single family owns atleast 2-3 private cars. Even the school children have personal cars. Apart from environmental pollution, it causes chaos on the roads and the noise of horns- HUH!. To have control on this, our goverment can implement some also also.

You are right Nisha...it's becoming more of a nuisance nowadays

Its a really interesting topic Rupa. I personally feel very strong about using the personal vehicle in a limited manner that doesn't hamper our nature's balance. In my organisation I have witnessed a very practical approach towards it.

Along with Carpooling they motivate employees to 'Cycle to Work' at least once a week. They also have cycles inside the campus as the only mode of transport (other than walking). This helps to keep the work environment clean and green.

Guess if all of us pledge to use cycle as the only way to commute at least once in a week, we can build a greener tomorrow :).

Yes Nitali, it's high time when we all should take some initiatives from our side. If big organisations come forward to keep the nature healthly then isn't it's our moral responsibility to consider such things individually ?
